[UPDATE: Position Filled] Open Call: Assistant Teaching Professor in support of Ethics Lab’s new AI & Health initiative
Georgetown University in Washington D.C. invites applications for the position, contingent on funding, of Assistant Teaching Professor, at Ethics Lab, an initiative of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics. The position is a full-time non-tenure faculty position with a 12-month term, renewable for a second year contingent on project funding.

Who We Are
Ethics Lab brings philosophy and design thinking together for two missions: education and work with external projects to effect change in the world. In its educational mission, it develops novel courses in areas of emerging ethics, and designs and delivers creative exercises for embedding ethics across the curriculum. In its impact mission, it provides ethics-centered consultation to research, policy, and industry project teams working in arenas of high complexity.
Assistant Teaching Professor of Philosophy
The Position
This position is specific to Ethics Lab’s stewardship of a funded initiative to develop innovative courses and cross-disciplinary program collaborations addressing the ethical challenges of AI & Health. The position will also assist in other initiatives of Ethics Lab, including work with external partners and team pedagogical design. The position carries a 1:1 teaching load. Responsibilities include development of 2 new courses at the intersection of technology and health; extending opportunities for Ethics Lab’s program partner network to include health-related faculty, schools, and programs at Georgetown University; and contributing to direct impact projects of the Lab.
Professional development funds are available to support this position’s contribution of new knowledge to academic, instructional, or sectoral communities. The form of this work may be scholarly, pedagogical, or practical/applied/translational in nature.
Requirements
Applicants should be able to speak to demonstrable experience (academic or otherwise) in emerging technologies and in health ethics. A background in ethical or social-epistemological issues related to race, gender, and other social identities is a particular advantage but not required.
A PhD in philosophy is required by the time of appointment. Candidates should be philosophically rigorous but also creative; enthusiastic about working with other disciplines; and passionate about bringing philosophy to the service of helping address immediate, real-world complexities. Candidates should be comfortable working in a collaborative team environment and practicing philosophy in contexts of innovation, ambiguity, and complexity; have strong interpersonal and writing skills; and be able to effectively time manage work on multiple projects. This Assistant Teaching Professorship is a 12-month appointment with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2023, and carries a highly competitive salary, benefits, and additional stipend for professional development.
