Director Maggie Little brings ethicist’s perspective to NIST’s first AI Risk Management Framework workshop

Director Maggie Little recently moderated a panel on approaches to managing trustworthy AI as part of NIST’s Artificial Intelligence Risk Management Framework workshop. The discussion focused on how to assess and measure technical and socio-technical characteristics of trustworthy and responsible AI across sectors and contexts.

The three-day virtual workshop is in support of NIST’s goal of fostering an open, transparent, and collaborative process as NIST develops a Framework to manage risks to individuals, organizations, and society associated with AI.

During the final panel, Little helped to synthesize key takeaways from the convening, including the need for clarification between standards for accuracy and standards for appropriate use.

“There are separate issues here, and so if NIST’s standards are about [accuracy], which is huge and important, just make sure that you don’t unintentionally leave people with the impression that if you’re good on that, you’re good on any ethical deployment.”
