<image:title>Blog - White Paper Publication: Ethics of Administrative Data Sharing - Just released!</image:title>
<image:caption>We are pleased to share with you a new publication, Ethics of Administrative Data Sharing: Agenda-Setting Framework. This white paper offers much-needed guidance for ethical stewardship of administrative data sharing as the field develops. Reflecting the views of an interdisciplinary group of scholars in data science, ethics, law, and policy, the white paper speaks to data intermediaries, providers, and requestors about which ethical issues to prioritize so that ethical standards don’t lag behind technological and policy innovations. The paper sets out core ethical values for data sharing, identifies goals and challenges for key players, and makes recommendations to encourage the development of ethical governance frameworks so that administrative data sharing can advance the common good while securing legitimacy and public trust.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Lab - Educational Mission</image:title>
<image:caption>A core mission of Ethics Lab is to innovate ethics education to help our students to responsibly confront — and help address — complex and evolving ethical challenges. Course Innovation We work as a team to rapidly pilot, iterate, and refine new courses at the forefront of emerging high stakes issues, from the recent explosion of development in AI to the environmental crisis of climate change. Our courses use collaborative, design-oriented activities and assignments to move students from careful analysis to a mindset for creative change. Embedded Ethics Program We collaborate with faculty in tech, health, and the environment to embed ethical discussion into their courses. Together, we co-design interactive exercises anchored to a course’s syllabus to integrate understanding and appreciation of the ethical issues inherent in the fields they will help to lead. Program Partnerships We partner with Georgetown’s next generation of academic programs in emerging issues. Ethics Lab served as incubator of a new undergraduate program in Tech, Ethics, and Society, and continues to deliver signature courses for the program that connect technical issues and methods to those in the humanities. Ethics Lab is currently working with Georgetown’s Earth Commons to integrate ethics throughout the arc of the student experience for a new proposed degree in Environment and Sustainability.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Lab - Real-World Collaborations</image:title>
<image:caption>A core mission of Ethics Lab is to reach outside the academy, and collaborate with those actively working to address these moral challenges. We work with selected partners from the tech, health, and environment sectors, including policy teams and companies founded to advance the common good. We work closely with our partners, helping them navigate the moral stakes their work confronts, and center ethics into their designs and mindset. Our external partners include foundations working to develop concrete guidelines on issues of urgent global reach, and companies working on solutions to pressing, fast-moving, and ethically complex issues.</image:caption>

<image:title>Impact - Empowering organizations at the front lines of building a better society</image:title>
<image:caption>In the past 3 years, Ethics Lab has helped nearly 20 organizations, providing ethics-centered workshops to help them grapple with complex ethical stakes and find actionable opportunities. Partners have included Harvard researchers constructing a new privacy-preserving algorithm; a pharmaceutical company team working to defend patient interests; a museum team developing a public exhibit on democracy; and a team developing ethics guidelines for a national network devoted to data sharing for the common good for the Sloan Foundation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Our novel approach to action-oriented ethics courses, developed over a 3-year sandboxing phase, attracts students from every school at Georgetown. New courses have launched in Data Ethics, Social Media & Divided Democracy, and Bioethics. Graduate-level courses are being added to provide a pathway for advanced study in emerging areas.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Our pioneering methodology for integrating ethics into science and policy courses has worked with programs in every school at Georgetown, connecting with over 30 faculty partners and reaching over 650 students. Ethics Lab’s partnership with Georgetown’s Computer Science department has won funding from Mozilla Foundation’s prestigious Responsible CS Challenge in recognition for its innovation in training technologists ethically.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mission - "Georgetown is taking its history and culture of ethics, its courage with hard conversations, as well as its storied innovation with pedagogy, to help found the field of digital ethics."</image:title>

<image:title>Mission - An agile platform for building new courses</image:title>
<image:caption>Increasingly, universities need new models for adjusting their curriculum in response to a rapidly changing landscape. Ethics Lab’s approach to building courses — with team design, faculty freed from departmental silos, and continual innovation — allows it to move quickly to respond to the most urgent priorities, and to focus on the skills and knowledge that will prepare students for what lies ahead.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mission - A resource for ethics innovation</image:title>
<image:caption>Profound changes in emerging technology and social capacities have moved faster than our ethical understandings. Progress requires not just consultation with established ethical frameworks, but help in building new ones. Our approach combines deep ethical expertise, strong knowledge of technical fields and real world contexts, and methods adapted from design to help industry leaders, government agencies, legislative bodies, and researchers find pathways of socially responsible choice.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mission - A scalable model for integrating ethics across the campus</image:title>
<image:caption>To scaffold students toward a socially responsible mindset, it is not enough for them to take an ethics class: ethics needs to be woven into the fabric of their majors. Ethics Lab’s unique approach to embedded ethics works with host faculty to co-design exercises and co-lead discussions across the arc of a major, to bring alive the moral stakes in their professions, provide tools to confront and fully engage with complexity, and model a commitment to ethical leadership.</image:caption>
