Overview & Tracks
This initiative seeks to introduce curricular innovation that can immediately and concretely impact student learning. The program is designed to support high-impact ethics education at Georgetown University.
Faculty may apply to one of the following three tracks, each of which offers a different funding model, design process, set of assessment expectations, and overall scope of work:
The Curricular Elements track is an opportunity for instructors to enhance a small component of a course with creative activities that can be done in class or short assignments that can help ethical reflection and character development. Instructors will partner with a team from Ethics Lab to adopt these creative pedagogies to a distinct assignment/discrete activity in their course.
This track is open to all instructors of record in the university, including graduate students and adjunct faculty. A stipend of $250–500 will be offered to compensate for the time spent developing the new activity for the course. If accepted, faculty agree to meet with Ethics Lab at least 2 weeks before the activity would be used so that the Lab can tailor the activity to fit the learning objectives of the course. Faculty also agree to assessments of the activity’s impact on students, also provided by Ethics Lab.
The Project-based Module track is an opportunity for faculty to pursue a 2–3 week ethics-infused project related to the course topic. For example, developing the opportunity to do personal genetic testing, with exploration of the ethical issues involved in a genetics course. This project will be developed in partnership with Ethics Lab and staff are available to assist in the delivery of this unit.
A stipend of $1,000–$2,000 will be offered to compensate faculty members for their time developing this new module for their course. If accepted, faculty agree to meet with Ethics Lab at least 1 month before the module would be used to allow time for tailoring to fit the learning objectives of the course. Faculty also agree to assessments of the module’s impact on students, also provided by Ethics Lab.
A stipend of $3,000 will be offered to compensate faculty members for their time developing this new project based course. In addition, Ethics Lab will provide additional resource support and staffing to scaffold the Lab experience. If accepted, faculty agree to meet with Ethics Lab before the start of the semester in order to participate in planning of the new course. Faculty also agree to assessments of the course’s impact on students, also provided by Ethics Lab.
Our aim is to have a high impact on students’ learning experience at Georgetown. All university instructors (both tenure-stream and full time teaching faculty) are encouraged to apply. We will select partners based on disciplinary diversity, institutional impact, exportability, and potential for positive impact on the course and student learning outcomes.
